#oneaday Day 461: A peaceful day in the forest

We've had a nice, quiet day today. After a lovely cooked breakfast, we thought we'd just spend a leisurely time in the pool today, so that's exactly what we did. The outdoor "Sprudel pool" had been out of action for the last few days and it was up and running again today, so that's where we spent most of our time. For the unfamiliar, the Sprudel pool (which I believe is German or possibly Dutch for "jacuzzi") is just an outdoor pool with pleasantly warm water. It also leads to the Wild Water Rapids slide-type thing, but there's also just plenty of space to enjoy the warm water and that distinctive feeling of being in the water, but outside.

There's also a cold plunge pool ("cold" meaning "anywhere from 10-19 degrees Celsius") that, on a previous visit, I discovered is indeed very cold, but it also makes getting back in to the warm water of the Sprudel pool very pleasant indeed. I didn't fancy it much this time, though, so I just stayed in the warm water in the first place.

My arms are proper knackered though. I think I may have been a bit too ambitious too soon with the gym, so I had today off and I will probably have tomorrow off also. I don't want to do myself a mischief, and I have had a decent amount of exercise today, between some swimming around and a fair bit of walking. Of course, most health benefits were probably undone by the delicious cake we had for our dessert this evening, but we're on holiday. Dieting and all that boring stuff can wait until we get home. And the relaxation while I'm away is actually getting me feeling fairly determined about all that stuff, so I will be diving back into weight loss with renewed… I'm not sure if enthusiasm is the word, but at least determination will suffice.

Tomorrow our plan is to go and have brunch at The Pancake House, which is a self-explanatory restaurant, and then we'll likely head back to the pool for a bit. We have a session booked at the "Aqua Sana" spa on Saturday, as I noted yesterday, and I'm looking forward to that. We're not having any expensive treatments or anything like that; we're just paying up for one of the 4-hour "Spa Experience" sessions, where they just let you loose in their 24 themed rooms to chill out, relax and enjoy yourself — and they feed you, too. It's £150 for the two of us for those four hours, so it's not a cheap day out, but since this holiday is basically a celebration of our tenth wedding anniversary (and we had some generous monetary gifts in that regard) we figured we might as well splurge on something that we might not otherwise have the chance or the inclination to partake in.

Anyway, I'm a cola cider and half a big bottle of Hooch deep so I think it's time for bed. I'm not pissed or anything, but I am feeling pleasantly relaxed. Here's to another lovely day tomorrow, and onwards to further fun and frolics in the forest.

#oneaday Day 460: A rainy day in the forest

It has rained most of today. I'm not complaining; it's been nice for the heat that we've been enduring for the past few months to break, and I've always been rather fond of the look and feel of a forest during the rain, particularly if you have a decent amount of shelter and/or the appropriate clothing to protect you — both of which we have, because we are English, and we are always prepared for torrential downpours, even in the height of summer.

It's been a relatively unremarkable day today, and that's just fine with me. I went down to the gym earlier and did a bit of stuff there, then caught the "land train" back to near our accommodation. The term "land train" always seems a bit redundant; most trains go on land. What they really mean here is "road train", given that it's a train that goes on roads rather than rails. Regardless of what they call it, though, it's a nice way of getting around the forest, and means you don't have to walk everywhere. This is good, because the site here is pretty large, and the topography varies quite wildly in one particular area, so it's nice to be able to jump on something that means you don't have to stagger up steep hills after, say, doing a workout that your body really isn't used to.

We spent much of the rest of the day in the lodge. I played Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, which I've had on my shelf for a while, and seemed like a nice holiday game. I reckon I could have probably polished the whole thing off in an afternoon, but I've called it a day for now, so there's a bit left to play tomorrow.

I haven't taken many photos as yet — while I love the forest surroundings, I tend to find that one shot of a bunch of trees tends to look like every other shot of a bunch of trees if you take too many, but if you're curious, here's a few little photos for you to enjoy:

This is a photo of a bunch of trees, as taken from the aforementioned "land train". While there is a lot of accommodation here, it's integrated very nicely into the forest, so there's usually at least one direction you can look in and see nothing but trees. Very nice indeed.

Here's where we're staying. It's an "Executive Lodge", which means it's slightly posher than the one we stayed in last time. That means it's a bit roomier, it has two toilets (one for pooing!) and a bubbly jacuzzi "hydrobath" in the bathroom. This is a noisy thing that… well, it makes your bath bubble like you're perpetually farting in it, but it's nice and relaxing for brief periods, particularly when combined with something relaxing in the water like a bath bomb. Andie and I have a tradition of stopping by Lush before a trip to Center Parcs and grabbing a few bath bombs to enjoy while we're here — I have indeed been doing just that for the past couple of days.

Here's a mildly artful shot by Andie showing a regular visitor to our patio (we absolutely, definitely haven't encouraged this with the judicious application of walnuts) framed by an empty glass and some Peperami ketchup bottles. (The Firestick one is really good!) According to Andie, the squirrel's name is Susan, though we don't actually know what its gender is, because we don't know how to tell that in squirrels. The Sword in the Stone led me to believe that lady squirrels had long eyelashes and sobbed over their loved ones, but I have seen no evidence of this.

Oh! And yes, I watched The Black Cauldron last night. As expected, it deviated significantly from the plots of the first two Chronicles of Prydain books, but it stood quite nicely as a story in its own right, so long as you don't get too sniffy about certain details of it. In the books, for example, Taran is completely unable to wield the magic sword Dyrnwyn, but in the movie he unleashes its full power with no difficulty whatsoever. Also, the one who sacrifices themselves to finally destroy the Cauldron once and for all at the end is completely different between the book and film, too, largely because the movie is a strange hodgepodge of influences from those first two books, discarding significant amounts of both in favour of making one nicely standalone movie.

In a way, I think this is probably for the best. We've all seen what happens when one story gets stretched out over multiple movies — be it whatever the fuck the Marvel cinematic universe is doing these days, or even the numerous Peter Jackson Tolkien adaptations. You can go a bit far in that regard; Disney's approach of acknowledging that books and animated movies are very different forms of media and thus have different requirements to tell their stories seemed to work well.

Anyway, we're hoping to get up at a reasonable hour and go for a swim tomorrow. We've also booked a session at the ultra-posh "Aqua Sana" spa for Saturday, so that will be a particularly luxurious opportunity to rest, relax and enjoy ourselves. In between, I'm sure we'll occupy ourselves appropriately. With that in mind, it's probably a good time to head bedwards for me!

#oneaday Day 459: First full day away

After that curious no-man's land that is the first day of one's holiday yesterday — the period where you spend most of your time travelling and getting settled — today was our first full day of rest and relaxation. And it's been thoroughly pleasant. We haven't done very much, but I have certainly enjoyed what we have done so far — and the day isn't over yet.

I promised myself before we went away that I would try and be at least a little bit active while we were away. I am really feeling every one of my years and every one of my stones right now, so I made a little commitment to myself: I would buy the £15 gym pass for while we were here, and I'd go and do a little something each day. I also (correctly) determined that the walk to and from the complex where the gym is would almost certainly be adequate cardio, so that would leave me free to focus on some strength training, which is probably what I really need at this point.

As it turned out, the signposts pointing to the "sports plaza" where the gym is told me a little white lie: while the Center Parcs app suggested a walking route that was less than a mile, the way the signposts took me actually ended up being a whole lot longer. Not a terrible thing from a health perspective, but a slight shock to the system when I was expecting something a little shorter. In total I reckon it was probably about a mile and a half rather than the 0.7 miles I was expecting — I know for "fit" folks that probably doesn't sound like very much, but believe me when I say my body is in a right old state.

The gym here is tiny, but it was also completely deserted when I went there, which was absolutely fine by me, as it meant I could take my time over the exercises I wanted to do, and wouldn't have to feel self-conscious about anything other than the full-length mirror that allowed me to gaze upon my disgusting carcass in its entirety while doing exercises. Oh well. The very fact I was in the gym should make me feel a little better about things, as at least I'm taking some steps — and my thinking is that if I can smash through that initial "wall" of resistance to exercise while I'm here and have no other stressors or distractions to worry about, I will hopefully be able to maintain some better habits when we get back home, too.

Thus far it has just been nice to be away. No notifications from Microsoft Teams, no social media garbage, no Discord, no people PMing me for customer service issues. I needed this escape, and I feel like I need to make a few changes at work when I get back. Those are things to consider on my return, though. In the meantime, I'm just going to enjoy this pleasant forest retreat, the lovely surroundings, the wildlife that occasionally comes to visit, the swimming pool, the private bubbly bath we have and, of course, the good food. All of life's worries can wait until after I get back.

After all, that's what a holiday is supposed to be about, right?

#oneaday Day 446: A quick week?

This week, oddly, seems to have kind of flown by. I'm not complaining at all, I hasten to add, because the quicker this week and the next goes by, the sooner the wife and I get to go on holiday. And we're both really looking forward to some nice time away.

Things are… less stressful than they have been at various other points over the course of the last few months, but I'm still pretty burnt out and ready for a break. It will be great to completely disconnect from social media, work and most other modern annoyances and just relax. I am taking some form of computing device with me on holiday, though; my intention is to set aside a bit of time to do some creative writing each day, as a pleasant "forest retreat" seems like the ideal environment in which to do such a thing.

I haven't quite decided how I'm going to achieve this as yet, though. I think what I'm probably going to do is buy one of those little portable monitors you can get, then either hook that up to my phone and run that in its "DeX" desktop mode, or just take my mini PC with me. Then all I need is a keyboard and mouse — and I have plenty of those — and we're sorted.

I'm not promising anything that is going to gush forth from my brain during the holiday is going to be great or even coherent, but I am conscious of the fact that I made a big deal of setting up that "Scratch Pad" site for the distinct purpose of doing creative writing, and then haven't done any as yet. That needs fixing, and being in a suitable environment to write for enjoyment and pleasure, rather than for obligations, would seem like a suitable opportunity to do just that.

But anyway. There's a week and a half of work to get through first, but I feel like I can make it through that without too much trouble. I've got a to-do list of things I want to (or should) try to complete before I leave, and it's not at all excessive in its length, so I'm pretty confident I will be able to achieve everything by or before next Friday. Because if it ain't done by then, it ain't getting done… until I get back, anyway. And, as unforgiving as I might have been sounding about unplugging and going pretty much "off-grid" during the holiday (aside from this blog, which will still see daily updates) I don't really want to leave my colleagues in the lurch while I am absent.

So that's that. Now it's time to head to bed and read a bit of The Black Cauldron, I feel. Or perhaps a quick game of something on the MiSTer before that, maybe…?

#oneaday Day 387: A weekend off

I didn't get around to making any videos. Well, that's a partial lie: I got some scripts done for quite a few, I just didn't record any. It's still very warm, I was feeling pretty tired, and I just didn't want to. So rather than feeling guilty about it, I just enjoyed the weekend, relaxed, played with my cats, played some Xenoblade Chronicles X (I'm finally into the new Definitive Edition story material) and just had a generally nice time.

Andie and I have also booked a holiday for later in the year. We're off to Center Parcs again, because it's a holiday destination we both like very much, and we were given some very generous tenth wedding anniversary gifts from both our respective sets of parents, so we're spending a hefty chunk of them on a nice holiday. While on previous visits, we've only gone Monday to Friday, this time we're going Monday to Monday. It's a lot more expensive to do that, but it also means you have a lot more time to unwind, relax and generally have fun.

We're going to the Longleat Forest site this time. We've been to this one a couple of times, as well as the Elveden Forest one. The Elveden Forest site has some nice memories for me, as it's the one I went to with my parents a couple of times as a kid — though of course it's changed quite a bit since then — but Longleat is a bit closer and arguably a bit nicer. We've lucked out with our accommodation, too; despite not paying up for the option to choose where your lodge is, we're in the "central" area which is not very far away from the main plaza area where most of the shops and restaurants are, so that will be nice. We're still getting an old lady-style wheelie bag to carry the shopping in, though, because balls to carrying heavy groceries on foot. We learned that to our cost last time!

So that's something to look forward to in September, which isn't really that far away now. We're nearly at the end of June, after all, which means just over two months until we can escape from It All for a bit and enjoy some quiet time in the forest. I'm really looking forward to it.

The world is a terrible and awful place right now, and it's very, very easy to feel overwhelmed by it all. So I'm very much looking forward to a week of not having to think about all the horrible things that exist in this world, and just enjoying myself. It is an important thing to allow yourself that time every so often, even if you're a committed "activist" for a cause (which I most certainly am not), because if you don't allow yourself that time to unwind, you're just doing yourself a disservice, and quite possibly mental harm in the process, too.

So yeah. The countdown to holiday has begun, and I'm sure the knowledge that I get to escape for a bit is going to make the next couple of months of work fly by! At least I hope so. It's been a difficult few months, for reasons I won't get into now (nothing to worry about, it would just be unprofessional of me to comment on specifics in such a public place) but I think, I think we're getting over the worst of it now. In fact, we're already starting to get ahead of schedule with stuff planned for next year! How exciting.

Anyway. My Sunday is rapidly disappearing, and I want to go and play some video games before I get to bed at a vaguely reasonable hour. So, on that note, good night — and remember: book yourself some holiday, even if you don't go anywhere. Time off is important!

#oneaday Day 133: Back to life, back to reality

We're back home! Boo! Although honestly, we're both kind of knackered, so it's nice to get back home, see the cats and have the prospect of our own bed waiting for us. It's been a lovely break, and we enjoyed a final dip in the pool before we departed early this afternoon, but now we both need a day or two to get ourselves back in working order for a vaguely normal existence from Monday onwards!

I was pleased to see that my cat Patti has been getting along with my mother-in-law while we were away. Patti is a very shy, scared cat when confronted with anyone other than us, but it seems that she's learned to trust my mother-in-law over the course of the last few days. The pair have spent some time together before and they had a similar outcome; Patti hid for the first little while, but eventually came out and became quite friendly and sociable once she determined once and for all that there was no threat, and, in fact, there was the distinct possibility of being spoiled with treats.

Oliver, meanwhile, has seemingly had a lovely time. He's already a very sociable cat, and it sounds as if my mother-in-law has had a nice time playing with him. We reckon he's probably about a year and a half old at this point, and he still loves to play for hours; we'll often hear him kicking his toys around well into the early hours of the morning once we've gone to bed, and he is showing no signs whatsoever of slowing down just yet.

A few packages arrived while we were away. One was a pair of swimming shorts that I paid for next-day delivery on in the hope that they would arrive before we left; needless to say, they did not, in fact, arrive on the next day thanks to Yodel being fucking idiots. "We need some more information about your address," they said. "Please contact us." They did not provide any means of contacting them, so I had to go ferreting through their support pages until I found the dreaded "Live Chat" option, then had to endure the obligatory Indian person with broken English copy-pasting set phrases and platitudes from their handbook, only for the outcome to be "we don't actually need any information about your address, we just fucked up and didn't even attempt to deliver it", which was nice. But at least I have a spare pair of swimming shorts for future excursions, I guess.

The one package I was hoping to arrive hasn't come yet, though: a box of all the Atari-branded sauces. As someone who enjoys sauce, I'm looking forward to trying these, and I also think it will make a fun video to try them all for the first time on camera, so I'm hoping these will arrive sometime soon. Sadly, they're not here yet and don't look like they've even been dispatched as yet, so I will have to wait a little longer to learn exactly what Yars' Revenge tastes like.

Anyway, I'm pooped and my back hurts, so I'm going to bed, in my own bed. I suspect I will not wake up until quite late tomorrow. And that's fine. I'm technically still on holiday, even though I'm back home. And I intend to continue enjoying that holiday until work starts again on Monday!

#oneaday Day 132: Broadcast Television

It must seem incredibly quaint to people who grew up after a certain point to know that when we wanted to watch something on television, we used to be beholden to an arbitrary schedule that wasn't decided by us, the viewers.

Sure, pay-per-view and on-demand services existed, but they were often extremely expensive and in some cases still beholden to someone else's  schedule.

Today, of course, if you want to watch something you just call it up from any of the bazillion streaming services available, or raid your network-attached storage that is loaded up with pirated movies you've torrented over the course of the last decade.

Streaming services have their own drawbacks, of course, with the two main ones being that there are about as many streaming services as there used to be cable packages, and the dreaded "analysis paralysis", where being given complete freedom to choose anything often causes you to end up choosing nothing.

The reason I bring this up is because while we've been away on holiday, we haven't had any TV-connected streaming devices with us. And you know what? It's been kind of nice. We've watched a bit of telly while we've been here, and it's just been whatever happened to be on while we wanted to just zone out for a bit. And broadcast television as it exists today is more than happy to cater to this type of viewer.

You know the sort of thing: shows that require zero commitment or even attention, like game shows and reality TV programmes about traffic police. Mindless garbage, to be sure, but somehow to me will always feel less offensive than attention-deficit slop on services like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Perhaps that's just my age talking — and to be clear, there's plenty of broadcast TV I find too offensively awful to even watch as background noise — but everything we've watched "by chance" this week feels like something I've actually got something from, even if it's just some general knowledge trivia. I absolutely do not get that from "pov: u ordered a large fish and chips at wetherspoons".

Anyway, it's time to go home tomorrow, so it will likely be back to not watching any broadcast TV at home. It's been a nice change, though, and a reminder that some forms of media still aren't quite as dead as some people would like you to believe.

#oneaday Day 130: Rest and Relaxation

Well, that's our first "full" day of holiday over and done with, and we've had a pleasantly relaxing, chilled out day. The temptation when coming somewhere like Center Parcs is to want to be doing stuff all the time, but honestly we've had a very nice day today just visiting the swimming pool in the morning, getting some bits and pieces from the shop for lunch and dinner, and then just enjoying hanging out in our lodge.

It's strange, isn't it? Even when you're doing the sort of things you'd usually do at home, they somehow feel more "special" when you're doing them somewhere out of the ordinary. I had a cheese baguette at lunchtime and it was approximately 48% more delicious by virtue of the fact it was prepared and eaten by me in a forest cabin rather than our house.

The wildlife around here is insanely tame. Earlier in the day, a group of ducks came up to our window and actually started tapping on it. They somehow knew we'd just made sandwiches, and wanted to participate. At other times, we've had deer and squirrels come right up to the patio doors, clearly begging. It seems the advice to not feed the wildlife mostly falls on deaf ears. And the wildlife, it appears, is not above being cute in an attempt to get food.

For activities that don't involve going outside, I decided to play through Ufouria: The Saga on Evercade while I was here, and I beat it earlier today. That was thoroughly satisfying; it's a great game, and I'm glad I took the time to play it. Perhaps some words on MoeGamer about that one when I get back.

Anyway, it's now well after midnight and I should probably sleep. No real plans for tomorrow except to have dinner out, and perhaps do some "Adventure Golf". Toodle pip.

#oneaday Day 129: Current holiday

We're on holiday! After a three hour drive earlier today — which honestly already feels like a lifetime ago — we are safely ensconced in our accommodation at Center Parcs.

The last few times we've been, we've stayed in the apartments that are near the main plaza of shops and restaurants, but this year it was only a little extra to get a two-bedroom lodge in the woods, so we've gone for that as a little extra added luxury. It's lovely having lots of space. Indeed, there's an entire (bed)room we probably won't use at all; presently, it's where I dumped my suitcase so it wouldn't clutter our bedroom.

We haven't done very much today. It's been nice to just relax with no worries or commitment to anything, so we've been enjoying that today. We had some nice dinner bought from the shop and an amazing cake, then the rest of the evening has been spent lounging, looking at the wildlife while the light was still present, then watching some TV (old school broadcast style!) and playing some video games.

Tomorrow we're likely going to hit the pool… sorry, the "Subtropical Swimming Paradise", and from there, who knows? We have some idle intentions of maybe going to the gym, playing some pool and going bowling, but we're just going to take each day as it comes and decide according to what we feel like.

The Lodge brings back some nice memories. When I came to Center Parcs as a teen with my family and some friends, we always stayed in a lodge (or a "villa" as they were known then) and while some things have changed — the appliances are more up to date and the TV is, of course, a wall-mounted flatscreen instead of a hulking great CRT — but aside from that, the layout feels comfortably familiar.

It's bringing back fond memories of my friend Ed attempting to explain the appeal of Wolfenstein 3-D to my parents over breakfast — as I recall, his 12 year old self arguing that you "just don't notice" the bloody violence after playing a whole didn't go down too well.

It's bringing back fond memories of my friend Craig and I watching MTV and realising that we both liked quite a bit broader a spectrum of music than the indie rock that was fashionable at the time — after that holiday, I remember going out and buying Madonna and Savage Garden albums on the strength of the tunes we liked on the TV.

And it's bringing back fond memories of a trip when I was young enough for my brother to still be living at home with us, and him bringing his friend Alex along. My enduring memory of that pairing was Alex, who thought he was God's gift to women, causing two girls to fall off their bikes by saying a distinctly Leslie Phillips-style "hell-O!" as they passed by.

A lot of good memories here, then, from both the recent and distant past. It'll be good to add a few more to the mix this year.

#oneaday Day 128: Imminent Holiday

As I may have mentioned once or twice recently, we're going on holiday tomorrow. We'll be away from Monday to Friday visiting Center Parcs in Elveden Forest, which has been a thoroughly nice place to have some time away on all the previous occasions we've visited.

My intentions for this holiday are to unplug almost completely. I will post on this blog daily because of the whole #oneaday thing, but outside of that, I intend to avoid any sort of attachment to the Internet whatsoever, except where absolutely necessary to research things. That means I am making the following promises to myself:

  • I will not worry about writing anything for MoeGamer or making any sort of video for YouTube.
  • I will not poke my head in on Discord channels that are likely to annoy me.
  • I will not look at Twitter at all.
  • I will minimise my use of Bluesky.

I haven't really talked about the last one at all, but as you may have surmised from the sidebar, I have been dipping my toe back into social media with Bluesky recently. And for the most part, I've found it a thoroughly pleasant environment that feels very much like Twitter did in the early days. It's very left-leaning, which can at times be a little insufferable, and wherever you look you're very likely to run into either a particularly horny furry or someone proud of the fact they're wearing a cage on their cock, but for the most part it has been a remarkably stress-free social media experience so far.

Part of the reason for this is that the platform is built to discourage "dunking", whereas Twitter outright incentivises it these days. The main way Bluesky differs from Twitter is through its absolutely nuclear block function, which means that if someone quote-posts or replies to someone they have subsequently blocked, if you are following the person who made the quote-post or reply, the original post will appear as blocked to you also. This discourages people from going "looking for trouble" because you can't even see the username of the blocked post. This can be frustrating at times if you missed the original context, but for the most part I think it's a positive thing.

So anyway, as a result of all that, and the fact I have a few friendly faces there, I have been using Bluesky a bit recently, and thus, if I'm going to share anything about the holiday that isn't on this blog, I'll likely do so there. If you're a Bluesky user and want to follow me, here.

But yes. Anyway, the main point of this post is to note that I will be disconnecting from the greater part of the Internet as much as humanly possible while I am away, because I need it. I need some time away where I just don't put any unnecessary pressure on myself, or potentially put myself in situations where I might end up getting annoyed. I'm tempted to outright leave a few Discord servers to remove the temptation altogether, but probably won't go that far.

This holiday is to rest, relax and genuinely get away from it all. My mental health has been in the toilet of late, and the Internet has played a big part in creating that situation. So instead I'm going to be among the trees, play some video games, go swimming and look at friendly deer. We might go and fire a crossbow (not at the deer) and play some pool, too. We haven't decided yet. But it's going to be nice.
