1323: PAX Pox

Another Penny Arcade Expo (aka PAX) is coming to a close, and once again I find myself sorry I wasn’t there — though perhaps not quite as sorry as I’d be if I wasn’t working in the games press and would not therefore be obligated to, you know, write about stuff if I was actually there.

That said, attending an event like PAX as a professional is pretty exciting, too — though for different reasons to if you’re going as a “civilian”. I haven’t covered a PAX as a professional since I’ve worked full-time in the biz, but I did attend a Gamescom for GamePro a couple of years back, and that was oddly thrilling. It was also completely exhausting due to the fact that I’d spend all day zipping between appointments and all night writing up the things I learned in said appointments, leaving approximately three hours for sleeping per night — no, I didn’t do any socialising whatsoever, but you know me; that was, to be honest, absolutely fine by me.

Gamescom is a bit of a different setup to PAX, though — at least in my limited experience having attended one of each. While PAX is a sprawling consumer show that occupies convention halls, theatres and corridors, and at which you generally have to make some very tough decisions about whether to wait in line to see panels and/or concerts or actually brave the show floor, Gamescom has a very clear divide between the “consumer” bit and the “trade” bit.

The “consumer” part of the Gamescom I attended was even more chaotic than PAX. Several huge halls of the Kölnmesse were devoted to the event, and for some reason the organisers seemed to think that turning the lights down low would be a really good idea. The floor of all the exhibition halls was literally (yes, I mean literally) carpeted with discarded flyers and other rubbish, and it was noisy, crowded and difficult to get around.

Contrast with the “trade” part, which was over on the opposite side of the Kölnmesse, and was the complete opposite — in fact, much more what I expected from a games industry show, based on my extremely limited experience from attending ECTS once back in the ’90s. A sense of calm; companies showing their products privately in booths, many of which had refreshments and comfortable chairs; a feeling of organisation rather than chaos. (Much more stereotypically German, to put it another way.) I vastly preferred the “trade” side of things, because it meant I got to see lots of cool stuff without having to fight my way through hordes of people who just wanted to stare at other people playing League of Legends on a big screen. This was largely because I had appointments to see specific people in the trade bit, whereas the consumer bit was pretty much a free-for-all.

That said, on balance I think I preferred my trip to PAX East to my professional engagement at Gamescom. At Gamescom I didn’t feel like I was “at home” or “among friends”, largely because I was just there to do a job and didn’t really have time to enjoy anything. At PAX East, meanwhile, I was among friends — many of whom I was meeting in person for the first time after many years of communicating on the Internet — and I had a real sense of “belonging”; of being among people who understood the same things I was passionate about.

One day I’ll make it back, and I’ll make a point of making some time to hang out with cool people. Until that happens, though, I’ll just have to gaze jealously from a distance at each PAX that comes and goes — and at my friends and colleagues who attend them.

#oneaday, Day 257: Away Message

I’m away for the weekend. Specifically, I’m attending the Eurogamer Expo, the UK’s answer to gaming conventions like PAX. It’s been running for a good few years now apparently but I only really became aware of it this year. I decided to attend, as I thought it’d be a good opportunity to get hands-on with some of the latest hotness that I’d missed out on at PAX, as well as catch up with a few friends from Twitter.

Eurogamer Expo has a way to go yet before it can even think about competing with PAX in terms of scale, but it’s certainly got potential. There are plenty of high-profile companies in attendance with their big games, and tickets sold out completely, so people are certainly interested in events like this. They need to sort out their non-existent press provision and look at more in the way of “special events” to make it a truly excellent gaming convention, though. Some evening concerts wouldn’t go amiss; or more in the way of the few developer talks and presentations that they do have already.

Day 1 has so far passed in a most pleasant manner and I am looking forward to tomorrow. I wrote an article about Fable III today, you should totally go and read it, as it’s awesome. Here’s the rest of the day in one-word summary format:

So that was my day. Tomorrow will be another day and hopefully I’ll get a chance to try out a lot of the things I didn’t get to see today. There’s a lot of really good-looking games on offer, most of which will be well familiar to people who went to PAX, in all likelihood. Fable III in playable form was the big deal for those who like that sort of thing, and it’s looking lovely. Peter Molyneux’s talk on the history of the Fable series and its influences from movies and games was particularly interesting, as you’ll know already if you’ve read this like I suggested earlier.

It was great to finally put a face to some Twitter usernames, too, and meet a few new ones as well. Hopefully over the next couple of days there’ll be more of that until we’re all one nice big happy games-loving family of awesomeness.

And, of course, tonight. Surprising a very dear friend was totally worth it. Even if I got called a few rude names along the way.

#oneaday, Day 74: Don’t Be A Dick

Just watched Wil Wheaton‘s Awesome Hour on the PAX 09 DVD. This has made me sorry I missed his keynote speech at PAX East, as he’s a fantastic public speaker, an excellent storyteller and a genuinely funny guy. Modest, too, which is always nice to see.

It’s strange to think about these people that we got the chance to see or even meet at PAX being “celebrities” in the geeks’ world, but complete unknowns to everyone else. The thing is, I personally feel that Wheaton, along with Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade, are far more admirable human beings than many people who are constantly in the news. What is it about them?

Well, I know why they are admirable people: they’re not dicks. But why do they toil in obscurity? Because of their geeky interests? Perhaps. I say it’s a shame. But it’s probably for the best. Would these guys be the same people they are now if they were constantly in the spotlight? Who knows. Perhaps they would be. I’d like to think so. But it’s actually kind of nice to have figures to look up to that belong entirely to your own subculture.

Wheaton said some interesting things in his speech and Q&A session, particularly about self-publishing material that you’ve written yourself. It’s something that I’ve considered myself, actually. But, of course, I need to write something first. I have quite a few half-finished novels in a folder on my computer (in fact, that folder’s made the jump across at least four different hard drives now) and an abortive attempt at last year’s NaNoWriMo in the planning stages.

If there’s one thing that this One A Day experiment has proven, it’s that I certainly can churn out some writing each day. Some of it’s not great, of course – I’m writing this at the same time as watching the end of Wheaton’s spot on the PAX DVD, for example – but I certainly don’t have a problem churning out… stuff. So perhaps I should try and actually, you know, write something.

So tomorrow I’m going to try and start a novel. And try and finish it. Not tomorrow, obviously, but I’m going to make a good attempt to write a bit every day. I’m going to take the NaNoWriMo approach of doing a brain dump every day and edit it later. I have a few ideas floating around in my head and have done for some time. Some of them are compatible. Others are not. The difficult thing is coming up with a concept that’s not shit. Or coming up with a good concept and ruining it with a shit twist. If there’s anything that Douglas Coupland novels have taught me, its that you don’t have to have big, stupid, dramatic twists to make a decent story.

So let’s see where this goes. I’ll post regular updates on here. If you’re lucky, even extracts. Though I’m weird about people reading work-in-progress writing, so you’ll have to be very lucky. But it starts tomorrow. You’ll see. You’ll all see! Bwahahahaha! *jumps out of window*

#oneaday, Day 71: Token Entry

Will shortly be boarding my flight back to the UK so am posting something now to… well, have something posted, to be perfectly honest. Missing a day because I’m asleep over the Atlantic? Laaame.

I said pretty much everything I needed to say post-PAX yesterday but I’ll just reiterate that this was a supremely awesome time for everyone – yes, Sam, better than Kaos and a kebab – and I hope we can all do it again sometime very soon indeed. Maybe next time those people who weren’t able to cone this time will be able to join us too.

For now though, boarding will shortly call and my battery is low. So I will bid you all adieu and see you back on the wrong side of the Atlantic.

#oneaday, Day 70: Thank You For Playing #PAX!!

These last few days have been the absolute best few days I’ve had for a very long time, representing not only some much-needed rest and relaxation but also an opportunity to meet some beloved friends face-to-face for the first (or, in some cases, second) time, hang out and talk shit about video games for hours on end. That was a very long sentence but it pretty much reflects how my mind is racing right now; I’m stoked to have met all these awesome people and I’m more convinced than ever that these long-distance friendships are not just “an Internet thing”, they are very much real relationships that many of us have built up without, in some cases, having any idea what the others really look like – not that that should matter.

So I’d like to say a very public thank you to the following people for making this weekend a huge success from my perspective: Mike Minotti (because he’ll complain like a bitch if he’s not first), AJ Minotti, Chris Minotti, Chris Whittington, Mark Whiting, Lynette Terrill, Christopher Bowley, Chris Person, Jeff Grubb, Derek Lavigne, Brett Bates, Eric Majkut, Chris IforgotyourlastnameandamverysorryandamnotsureifIknewitinthefirstplace, Lik Chan (sorry we didn’t get more time to chat!), Joey Chiu, N’Gai Croal, Shawn Elliott, the other guys I went to lunch with and can’t remember your names (sorry!) and, of course, my awesome brother John Davison.

I may have missed someone inadvertently. If so, I apologise profusely, and it wasn’t deliberate. Give me a slap in the comments and I will correct the above list forthwith.

I missed Wil Wheaton’s keynote speech on Friday, but he was good enough to post an excerpt from it on his blog, summing up the way I think most of the 60,000 nerds who descended on Boston this weekend feel. “Games are important. Games matter. PAX is where we come together to celebrate that. Gaming is the foundation of the best friendships I’ve ever had, and it’s the mortar that has held my group of friends together for almost 25 years.”

The Squad has only known each other for a fraction of that time, but already it’s clear that we’re a tightly-knit group of people despite being scattered to the seven winds. (Are there seven winds? I just made that up, I think.) Meeting this weekend for the first time (in most cases) cemented that relationship and it makes me feel good to know that I’ve got friends that I trust and respect, friends that I can share what’s important to me with – even if they’re all thousands of miles away. Thanks to the Internet, we’re always close enough to chat or play something together, and I know these friendships will continue for years to come.

I have a ton of awesome photos to share but haven’t unloaded them from my camera yet. That will probably have to wait until I get back home on Tuesday, but rest assured there are some gloriously nerdy things to share.

One more time: PAX has been the most awesome time. If you’re a nerd reading this and you’ve never been to a gathering of this magnitude, take the next opportunity to do so that you get. You won’t regret it.

Sentimentality over. Flying back home tomorrow evening, arriving back in the UK early on Tuesday morning.

#oneaday, Day 69: #PAX Day 2

Wow, what an insanely hectic day. This is going to be a short one as I’m absolutely knackered.

Today we caught a couple of panels – firstly, the “Death of Print” panel that my brother was appearing on along with several others, and then the “Podcasting for PR” panel featuring Shawn Elliott, Jeff Green, Ken Levine, Major Nelson and a guy from Insomniac whose name escapes me right now. Both were excellent, thought-provoking discussions. The podcasting one in particular gave us some great ideas for future podcasts, and the “Death of Print” panel raised some interesting questions and food for thought about the future of the print vs online divide. Particularly after hearing those guys speak, I firmly believe there is a future for both, but each should stop trying to be the other.

I got the chance to spend some time with my brother today, which is an extremely rare pleasure, with the last time I saw him, if I remember correctly, being our wedding well over a year ago. I also got to hang out with Shawn Elliott, N’Gai Croal and some other media types whose (I apologise) names also escape me right now in my super-tired state. Not to sound like that pathetic fanboy, but it was actually quite an honour to get the chance to sit down and talk to a selection of people who have helped shape the games industry into what it is today. So I guess this is a public “thank you” for those guys giving me the time of day – and hopefully not just because of my last name. Thank you to big bro for letting me tag along, too.

Didn’t get the chance to hang with the Squad as much as I wanted to today but, you know, family has to come first sometimes. Tomorrow, though, will be a different matter, as John flies back early in the morning leaving the day free for Squad activities. And I am certain there will be plenty – watch this space for further details!

I have more to talk about but I can barely keep my eyes open right now. More tomorrow!

The only last thing I do want to share is that PAX is awesome. It’s such a good feeling to be in a place with sixty thousand other “harmless” and “nice” people. Normally I hate being in crowds as it makes me feel self-conscious, but the wonderful thing about PAX is that we are surrounded by people who are just like us – people who like the same things (to varying degrees), people who don’t feel the need to be unpleasant just for the sake of it (the fear of which is what causes the greatest amount of anxiety to me) and above all, people who are just friendly, pleasant, intelligent and fun to be around.

Also, there was a totally hot Bayonetta cosplayer wandering around today, which made both Chris and me very happy indeed. You can mock cosplay all you want, but when someone is 1) attractive and 2) making a proper effort the results are just… wow. Anyway, enough of that. Late night delirium talking. *wipes dribble off chin*

To anyone still out on the town tonight: have a great one and I’ll catch you tomorrow. To anyone back at home wishing they were here: you should definitely make the effort to come to a PAX if you ever get the opportunity. To anyone back at home reading this and thinking “what the fuck is he talking about?” – politely respect the nerds in your community and continue about your business.

#oneaday, Day 68: #PAX East, Day 1

Wow, what a rush! Day one of PAX East is already over and it’s been awesome so far.

Early part of the day was spent meeting, greeting and showering off our respective journeys. Chris “RocGaude” Whittington and I made it into the show just after Wil Wheaton’s keynote speech, which is a shame because the buzz on Twitter made it sound rather inspirational. Still, immediately after that was Gabe and Tycho’s Q&A session, which was seven degrees of pure-grade awesomeness. I’d never actually seen them in person before but their banter was hilarious and they have huge amounts of stage presence, wit and talent. I can see why they’ve become the huge successes they have.

Later, we tried to get in to a panel about the current state of storytelling in interactive fiction, hosted by, among others, Andrew “Zarf” Plotkin and Emily Short. Sadly we were just too late for that one, but we did manage to attend the first screening of GET LAMP, an extremely well put together documentary about the rise, fall and rise again of interactive fiction. The filmmaker had managed to interview a huge number of luminaries of the genre, including Don “Adventure” Woods and Steve “Infocom” Meretzky, both of whom were in attendance along with Plotkin and several others from IF’s past for a post-movie Q&A session.

We also spent a bit of time with the BitMob crowd at the puntastic “Pour House” where the beer was flowing freely and, by the sound of his tweets, Jeff Grubb is absolutely wasted. Holla. I won a T-shirt too. Awesomesauce!

Tomorrow should be a busy day. Hitting the show floor to scoop some stories for my new gigs at Kombo and Daily Joypad, then later am getting the chance to catch up with my brother. Hopefully, then, later in the evening, the Squadron of Shame will be recording something awesome from PAX to share with you all.

Anyway, it’s 1:15am EST right now and I should probably go to bed. Suffice to say that so far PAX is proving to be everything I hoped it would be. I wish there were more in the way of nerd superconventions like this in the UK. I had to cheer when Gabe and Tycho said their next aim for PAX is to do EuroPAX. That would be awesome.

#oneaday Day 61: Call me Gordon

I’m a free man! Yes, my contract finished today so as of right this moment I am unemployed. At least as far as that pesky full-time work goes. I’ll tell you one thing I won’t miss, and that’s the 40-mile commute with the immensely predictable traffic around Winchester. I don’t know what it is about that place, but the M3 slows to a crawl and all of the roads in and out of the city also slow to a crawl, so it’s impossible to win whichever way you choose to go. I let fly with quite a few obscenities on the way home tonight as all I wanted to do was get home.

I’m not going to be sitting on my ass doing nothing, though. I have plenty of things lined up. I have some music pupils starting this week (and, of course, if you know anyone in the Southampton area who is looking for a music teacher, kindly point them in the direction of http://www.pjedmusic.co.uk) and I am shortly to put up a site advertising IT tuition services. Then I’ll be doing some writing, too, for a couple of different sites: Kombo.com and DailyJoypad.co.uk, both of which are going to be a great way to get some exposure for my writing, along with the stuff I’ve done for Good Old Games and WhatTheyPlay in the past.

Right now, it’s late, there are drunken morons shouting incoherently outside my window and I’ve just finished recording an episode of the Exploding Barrel Podcast with the ever-awesome Minotti brothers. Just looked out of the window and the noise was being made by two… I hesitate to call them “men” because they were acting like the kids I’ve been teaching. Two of them. It sounded like a bloody football crowd. And this after Southampton was (apparently) voted “most welcoming and friendly city in the UK“. (I call bullshit on that, by the way, in case you hadn’t guessed).

Tomorrow is the first day of a new beginning, or something. I’m meeting one of my (potential) new pupils, I’m getting some stuff sorted ready to do my website writing and I’ll have the chance to kick back and actually relax a bit for what feels like the first time in months. It’s like a big weight has gone from my shoulders.

I feel bad for my colleagues I left behind as they are without exception awesome people that I will miss a great deal, and they’re in a tough situation that is going to be hard work to get through. What I won’t miss, however, is the stress of that job, the (8-year old) kids who climb walls and get brought in by the police, the reams and reams of ultimately fairly meaningless paperwork, the finger-wagging “official” people telling us that we don’t know what we’re doing and… well, you get the idea. Here’s to a more positive future, but I will spare a thought for those great people I worked with regularly.

I’m just rambling now, clearly. I think it’s time to go to bed. Up and at ’em tomorrow morning… and PAX is creeping ever closer. I can’t wait.

#oneaday, Day 54: End of another week

It’s that time again. Friday night. I chose not to listen to Radio 1 on the way home tonight, which means I didn’t want to throw things at Annie Mac and her stupid jingles. Whoever decided the airhorn should be the iconic sound of “I Think This Is A Fine Piece Of Music And No Mistake” should be punched in the testicles or lady-equivalents. But no matter, because I didn’t actually hear it tonight. I drove home listening to, of all things, The Sims 3 soundtrack. What? It’s cheery and relaxing, and after the day I had, I needed cheery and relaxing. It was that or whack on Bayonetta’s soundtrack and freak people out with either J-pop or epic scary choirs blasting out of my car.

This weekend I will be editing the next SquadCast on the subject of Machinarium, an endearing little adventure/puzzle hybrid available for PC and Mac. I will refrain from talking about it too much here as we discuss it at great length on the SquadCast which should, barring disasters of unforeseen proportions, be available by the end of the weekend.

Other plans for the weekend include Final Fantasy XIII, which I’m enjoying a great deal so far, and maybe a bit more of the Blur beta, which I’ve been playing a little bit of this evening – check out my thoughts here.

I’m actually looking forward to being unemployed as I’ll have time to do lots of things I’ve been meaning to for ages but have usually been too exhausted to. Sitting on my imaginary To-Do list is the production of a website for my potential computer tuition services, some more writing for here, pJedi and BitMob, some chasing of potential sources of freelance writing work and, of course, some time to actually wind down. After the week I have coming up, I will probably need it, but the less said about that, the better.

Then there’s PAX. I can’t wait. It’s going to be an awesome time when I get the chance to see some very dear friends – some for the first time, others for the second. After that, who knows where things will lead?

My new life may not be easy all the time, but I’m certainly looking forward to taking control and doing things for myself.

One A Day, Day 10: On The Edge

Part the First

Horrible day today. The behaviour of the children is getting worse and worse and I feel powerless to do anything about it. Probably because I am powerless to do anything about it. My predecessor apparently used to “bellow” at them every so often to get them to be quiet, but last time I bellowed at them (which got the point across nicely, incidentally) I ended up being the one getting told off for it. Which is pretty ridiculous, really.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Children respond to shock tactics and humiliation. The stupid culture of reward that is instilled in modern education now does not achieve anything. When you reward children for everything, including sitting down on a chair (I’m not joking) all rewards completely lose their impact and all you’re left with are punishments… which don’t work because the kids don’t respect adults. It’s a complete no-win situation and short of a drastic shakeup of the education system, I don’t see a way forward. But it’s not politically correct to punish children. It’s not even politically correct to shout at them any more. Teachers are impotent in the face of poor behaviour.

Take one kid in my class. I won’t use his real name. Let’s call him Jack. No, actually, let’s call him Cock. Because he is.

Cock has a difficult home life – one of those indecipherable ones involving domestic violence and on-off relationships. As a result (apparently) he’s become the person he is – rude, argumentative, confrontational, violent, cheeky and lazy. The school he’s at now – where I teach him – was about his third in the space of a couple of months when he arrived.

I can’t do anything with him. And when he chooses to kick off, he drags the rest of the class along with him. Because, being kids, they find it hilarious when he lies on the floor, or runs around chasing people, or starts shouting “The Pakistanis are coming!”. In a school with a rather large ethnic minority population.

And there’s nothing you can do about it. He’s been spoken to by me and senior members of staff at the school. His parents have been spoken to. He’s had letters home. He has special sessions with teaching assistants. Yet still he’s an asshole. His home life is used as a constant excuse for his shitty behaviour. And while it may upset him, that’s still not an excuse. There’s too much hand-wringing over what are delightfully termed “challenging” children. They should suffer the consequences of poor behaviour just like everyone else. Except no-one else really suffers any consequences either.

Right. Starting to see the problem here.

Still, after handing in my written resignation I calculated today that I only have 51 days until my escape – only 35 of which are actually teaching days. Which is nice. Beginning to wish I had just given them a week’s notice and buggered off.

Part the Second

So Apple finally announced the iPad, the official name of the “Apple tablet” which everyone has inexplicably known about for months. And already there are painfully unfunny jokes going around about the “iTampon”. I may just be grumpy because of a shit day, but I don’t find that even a little bit funny – largely because we’ve had things called “[something] pad” for years and no-one has ever commented. My estimation of the intelligence of the Internet has just dropped a notch, and I’m reminded of something Mark Whiting of the Squadron of Shame said on our Deus Ex podcast – “Back in ’99 we all thought the Internet would turn into SkyNet. This was before we knew it would turn into 4Chan.”

As for the device itself… it’s a big iPhone which, at this time, I have no interest in owning. I like proper computers too much to even consider a tablet. Call me a traditionalist.

Part the Third

At the time of writing, in 12 hours’ time, there will be something exciting announced on Good Old Games. They have been cock-teasing everybody for the last few days on Facebook and Twitter… tomorrow we’ll get to finally find out what the big news is. I’m certainly intrigued. You should be too.

Now it’s late. Time for bed for me. This entry has been fragmented, but so has my brain. I really don’t want to have to go in and deal with those kids again tomorrow… but I have to just keep counting down to first freedom and then an undoubtedly awesome time at PAX East. I can’t wait. For either thing.
