The primary danger of "open world" is the very real risk of boredom. I live in an actual open world. I CAN go to any mountain that I see. I don't play video games for that. I want carefully crafted toyboxes filled with constant stimuli. I thought that Shadow of Mordor did really well in this regard. There's very little wasted space in that title, even though it's largely based on the Assassin's Creed formula. There's always a goal to pursue nearby that leads to tangible benefits for character growth. Nothing feels aimless, and no time ever feels wasted.
Despite its gorgeous visuals, this is why I remain skeptical of No Man's Sky. They haven't actually shown me that there's anything interesting to DO on those infinite worlds.
