Sight-reading was the worst for me and remains so – due to the fact that I couldn't see very well for the first 8 years, which my rather self-centred parents didn't notice. I struggled to see let alone make sense of what was on the music page, and relied entirely on 'playing by ear' – which I still do. When I finally got glasses and could see, I then had to try and visually make sense of what was written on the music page. It is slow and painful, because even now I don't trust my eyes – I know what the notes say, but will my hands play what my eyes tell me to play? I fumble, groping my way through what my mind can see and hear instantly. I dread learning new pieces of music, yet crave to play them. And the worst is that having achieved them, when I next go to play them I have to start near the bottom again, as my brain resists releasing the auto-play to my hands!!! Grrr!!! Sigh ………
