This is how Facebook is in 2014, yes. The site decides for you what is most "relevant" through various convoluted algorithms, so there's every possibility there's some stuff you might want to see that you're missing. The only way around it is to ruthlessly cull your friend lists and keep it purely to people you know. It's a pain — and it's not how it used to be.

I'd like to get rid of all the extra people that crop up on my facebook page just because I know one person. I get lumbered with their friends none of whom I've ever heard of let alone met. The facebook page scrolls down rapidly so that I have to search for little bits of info or family members relevant to me through reams of dross. Am I just being intolerant? Is this just how facebook is? Is there a way for me to still have the people I know and want on my facebook page without all their pals? Help!!
