Thanks Pete, that was great! I thought it might be the case – that we pronounced anime as 3 syllables and not aneeem or ani'm. Thus I also thought that we would pronounce dere as 2 syllables deredere as 4 – not as deardear. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it so clearly. And I was right about what anime is. 😀

Japanese pronunciation is actually a lot easier than English in that each (Romanised) letter is always pronounced the same, rather than the myriad variations we have. The basis of all Japanese sounds are their five vowels a (as in "apple"), i (as in "finger"), u (like in "human" but without the "y" sound at the beginning), e (as in "led") and o (as in "orange"). Each vowel can be preceded by a consonant, and these sounds are organised into sets, so you have your basic vowels (a, i, u, e, o) then, say, your "k-" set (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko) and so on. There are a few exceptions to the rule (the letter "n" can stand by itself, for example, but also has its own vowel set), but for the most part they follow this fairly rigidly.

Consequently, "anime" (which refers specifically to Japanese animated work, either in TV series or movie format) is correctly pronounced "ah-nih-meh", but is more commonly pronounced "ah-nih-may" by Westerners, which also explains why some people put an accent on that last letter "e" when writing it.

"Tsundere" is a more tricky one, but you can figure it out by splitting it into the individual sounds tsu, n, de and re (tzoo-nn-deh-reh, roughly). "Tsuntsun" and "deredere", which are the words which were chopped up to make "tsundere", are pronounced exactly the same ("tzoo-nn-tzoo-nn" and "deh-reh-deh-reh").

The easiest-to-learn Japanese alphabet simply represents all these sounds with symbols.

How do you pronounce these words that belong to the Japanese games? Anime, tsundere, tsuntsun, deredere, I don't know if you pronounce the final 'e' in them, or if it's closer to English. And Anime refers to anything with character artwork shown in this blog – right? Or is it more than that?
