The amiga is more of a descendent of the 8 Bit atari's than the c64. There really isn't any c64->amiga lineage.

I see your point, but I disagree; and as you say anyway, I specify explicitly that I'm referring to the Atari range of 8-bit computers, so it's something of a moot point.

Just as "C64" or "Commodore" was the established abbreviation for "Commodore 64", so was "Atari" the established shortening of "Atari's range of 8-bit home computers". It distinguishes itself from Atari's other products since these others were typically referred to by their product name—VCS or 2600, ST, Falcon, Jaguar, Lynx… I can't remember the last time they were referred to as just "Atari", whereas the 8-bit range frequently were. This was largely because of the range's diversity; saying "Atari 400/800/XL/XE" would get rather tiresome and cumbersome after a while! Hence… "Atari". 🙂

'Atari' could literally mean any of that companies products. Although you specified once that you were referring to an a8 (XL/XE), simply saying 'Atari' is misleading and not actually referencing anything.

Hah. The modern console wars have nothing on the bitter rivalry between Atari, Commodore and Sinclair.

"Crappydore 64! Spectrash!"

Being an Atari boy, I never found out what the Atari equivalent of the bastardised system names were. Arsetari perhaps? Who knows? It is one of those pieces of knowledge that will be lost to the mists of time, I think.

Although most of the hate wars are over, I remember fondly all the old rivalries between different computer and console users. Today, the closest thing we see is XBox 360 vs PS3 or PC gamers vs console gamers.
