I used to be a bit 'rushy' when I worked for BT in Southampton, but moving to Bristol has made me realise that there really should be no rush. Working from home makes this all the more true… I make sure I have time to chill-out and just enjoy not doing things. Being a web designer and therefore on the internet at least 7 hours each day makes it all the more important to have space to think and go slow. Otherwise I think I'd die right about….. now.

Before I moved to Bristol, I was always told (by my colleagues in Southampton) that it's a real go slow city. Not in the sense that there are constant traffic jams (there are though, to be fair), but in the sense that people are more laid-back and have no desire to constantly rush about like the poor bastard be-suited office workers of London.

And regarding being wordy: I'm always rather verbose – even in text messages. I prefer to get my ideas across properly, rather than leave a series of acronyms, abbreviations and junk talk.

Personally, I am with you. While I may not have thought so as a young person, these days I find slow food superior in every way to fast. ("In praise of slow" is actually IMO quite good, by the way.)

There's been a lot of attention paid lately to the idea that the internet is actually rewiring the way we think, rendering some of us actually UNABLE to do things like sit down and read a book – a brain conditioned to filtering mountains of text in tiny snippets to glean information becomes uncomfortable when confronted with 400 pages of it. If true, this is of course a great shame. I can't imagine not being able to read books! 🙂

Here's to a world where everything goes more slowly and a good time is had by all.

However, my tendency to over-commit myself is my biggest hurdle. Luckily, my wife shares the exact same philosophy as you so that helps me ease the pace on a daily basis.

By the way, I really like the new blog home and layout. I've also have a blog here at WordPress (it's just a mirror of the Blogger one) that I never use. I'll have to play around with it to see if I can come up with similar results.
